Available Training Courses
Counterbalance Training
The counterbalance forklift is what most people think of when talking about forklift trucks. They are by far the most common fork trucks in use in the world today. Their versatility means they are useful both inside and outside.
Telehandler Training
No building site or farm is complete without a rough terrain, telescopic truck. With large tyres and high ground clearance, there aren't many locations they can't work in. Some come equipped with legs for increased stability.
Reach Truck Training
The reach fork truck is a common sight in most warehouses. They have great manoeuvrability and the ability to reach into warehouse racking. Usually chosen when height, rather than weight is the main purpose of use.
Reach (Stand-On) Training
The reach (stand-on) truck isn't as common as the standard truck but has the same manoeuvrability and usefulness as its cousin. An indoor machine due to its tiny three wheels. This time the operator is seated rather than standing.
Pallet Stacker Training
This pedestrian truck is ideal for handling Euro Pallets. They are very manoeuvrable so ideal for narrow aisles but with the added ability of being able to lift pallets into and out of racking systems. Some models can lift 1.6 tonnes to a height of 6+ metres.
VNA Training
A VNA truck can fit into an aisle that is only a few centimetres wider than the truck. They are guided in these narrow spaces by either wire or rails. Their usual rated capacity is 1-1.6 tonnes with some models able to lift in excess of 15 metres.
Straddle Truck Training
A straddle truck is influenced by the powered pallet truck and counterbalance forklift. They are very manoeuvrable so ideal for narrow aisles but with the added ability of being able to lift pallets into and out of racking systems.
PPT (Rider) Training
The rider version of the powered pallet truck is an electric low-level lifting and moving vehicle. They are very manoeuvrable and suit all types of light-duty applications, such as horizontal transport and loading and unloading vehicles.
PPT (Pedestrian) Training
Another powered pallet truck, this time the pedestrian version. Regularly seen in supermarkets shifting pallets onto the shop floor. Often used in partnership with another truck, working on a mezzanine floor or in a basement where access is limited.
LLOP Training
The low-level order picker is an electric-powered lifting and moving truck. The operator stands on a platform located either in the centre or at the back. Their main purpose is order picking but they can be used to load and unload lorries.
MLOP Training
The medium-level order picker is an electric-powered lifting and moving truck. The operator stands on a platform located either in the centre or at the back. Their main purpose is order picking but they can be used to load and unload lorries.
HLOP Training
The high-level order picker is an electric-powered lifting and moving truck. The operator stands on a platform located either in the centre or at the back. Their main purpose is order picking but they can be used to load and unload lorries.

Complying with the law
Getting it right is crucial
Training staff isn’t optional but a requirement under health and safety law. The following statements are taken from the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974:
"It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees."
"...provision of such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of his employees"
The following can be found in The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998:
"Every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken."
"Every employer shall ensure that any of his employees who supervises or manages the use of work equipment has received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken."
Using forklift equipment can be dangerous, making training essential. Choosing the right company to provide training for your business is an important decision. South Coast Forklift Training understand that Health and Safety in the workplace is paramount. That is why every forklift course we deliver starts with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. We explain both employer's and employees' duties under this act and their responsibilities in helping their employer to comply with the law.
On top of basic forklift training staff must also be regularly refreshed, every 3 – 5 years is recommended. Failure to carry out and refresh forklift training may invalidate any business insurance cover. If an incident were to occur and it's proven the company was at fault they may be fined and owners sent to jail.
Accredited forklift courses
Not all courses are the same
Forklift operator training should only be carried out by instructors who have themselves undergone appropriate training in instructional techniques and skills assessment. They should give instruction only on the types of lift trucks and attachments for which they have been trained and tested as operators.
Instructors also need sufficient industrial experience to enable them to put their instruction in context and adequate knowledge of the working environment in which the trainee will be operating. The Health and Safety’s Rider-operated lift trucks Approved Code of Practice and Guidance states this to be the minimum standard required.
Using a non-accredited instructor or organization makes it a lot harder to prove that the training meets this required standard. That is why South Coast Forklift Training delivers Independent Training Standards Scheme & Register (ITSSAR) accredited training as standard. Using an accredited training company, such as ourselves guarantees the instructor is qualified and registered; they will have undergone regular independent examination of their competence to deliver training to the required standard.
All accredited courses are on a database for future reference; ours are on ITSSAR’s Trained Operator Passport Scheme (TOPS).
