On-Site HLOP Courses

Training that works in the real world, not just the test

We deliver high-level order picker (HLOP) training directly on your premises, helping employers ensure their operators are trained safely, competently, and in line with recognised industry standards.

All our training courses follow ITSSAR guidance and the Health and Safety Executive’s Approved Code of Practice, supporting your legal responsibilities while developing operators who can work safely in real workplace conditions.

Training combines essential knowledge with practical, hands-on instruction using your equipment and environment. The focus is not just on passing a test, but on producing operators who can use an order picker safely and efficiently in day-to-day operations.

How Our Training Works

Training on Your Premises

All high-level order picker (HLOP) training is delivered on-site at your premises using your own equipment and working environment. Training operators on the trucks they use every day helps develop practical skills that directly reflect normal warehouse conditions, operating procedures, and load handling requirements.

High-level order pickers are battery-powered machines commonly used indoors within warehouses and distribution centres for order picking tasks carried out at significant working heights. These machines allow operators to access elevated picking locations while manually handling stock within racking systems. Training on your own equipment and within your normal working environment helps operators become familiar with the controls, operating characteristics, picking procedures, lift heights, and warehouse layouts they encounter during day-to-day operations.

As high-level order pickers involve working at height and manual handling activities, additional safety considerations may also form part of the training process depending on the equipment and working environment.

Courses are tailored to your business requirements and scheduled to minimise disruption wherever possible. Both practical and theoretical instruction can be adapted to suit novice, experienced, refresher, and conversion training requirements.

Facilities Required

We will require access to your high-level order picker (HLOP) along with a safe, undisturbed area suitable for practical training exercises and testing. Access to the warehouse aisles, racking systems, and picking locations used within your workplace is normally required for realistic operating exercises. Suitable loads and picking tasks relevant to your workplace activities are also beneficial where available. Traffic cones and training materials are supplied by the instructor.

As high-level order pickers involve working at significant height, additional safety procedures and controls may be required depending on the equipment and working environment.

For theory sessions, a small office or meeting area with a table, chairs, and power is sufficient for the instructor and trainees.

Operators must wear safety footwear and any personal protective equipment required under your company’s risk assessments. High-visibility vests are supplied where required.

Accredited Certification

On successful completion, your business will receive full certification documentation for each operator, including an ITSSAR-accredited counterbalance forklift certificate, a photo identification card, and a written assessment of performance - all included within the course fee.

Qualifications are nationally recognised and recorded on the TOPS (Trained Operator Passport Scheme) database, providing clear, verifiable proof of training and helping employers maintain accurate training records.

Following training, clients also receive a range of supporting documentation and resources, including:

  • Refresher training reminders
  • Relevant health and safety documentation

Quick Answers to Common Questions

Do operators need specialist training to use a high-level order picker?
Yes. High-level order pickers require specialist training due to the risks associated with elevated operator platforms, stock picking at height, and working within warehouse racking systems.
What training level do my operators need?
This depends on their current experience. Operators may require novice, experienced, refresher, or conversion training depending on their previous training and the type of equipment being used.
How long does high-level order picker training take?
Course duration depends on the operator’s experience level, the number of delegates, and the type of training required. ITSSAR sets minimum course durations to help ensure operators are properly trained and assessed.
How high does a high-level order picker raise the operator?
High-level order pickers raise the operator above 3 metres (3000mm) to the operator platform height. Additional site rules, safe systems of work, and emergency procedures may apply depending on the equipment and working environment.
Does the course include practical training?
Yes. Training combines classroom-based theory with practical instruction and assessment using your equipment and working environment.
How often should operators complete refresher training?
The HSE recommends refresher training at regular intervals, typically every 3 to 5 years, or sooner if unsafe practices are identified or workplace conditions change.
